The second brood of swallows in the end of the barn fledged today. Their flight was a short hop across to one of the beams. Later in the day they started exploring a kept coming in to the new part of the barn to see what I was doing…then couldn’t find their way out again.

It’s courgette season
I go away for a few days and I find the courgettes have been taking over
There are more on the way and I’ve left one to grow into a marrow.
We’ve also got one squash large enough to eat…well football sized. We think its a spaghetti squash – now I just have to fight my way to the label at the base of the plant to confirm it!
Was it a bat I saw?
Yes! At noon today, there was a bat milling around above the pond, hunting insects. I suppose the weather’s been so dreadful that they haven’t been able to hunt at night and are very hungry. He was far too fast for me to get a photo, but judging by the enormity of his ears, I suspect he was a Long-Eared Bat!
The Reduced August
Well, during the last month I constructed in my mind all sorts of exciting, witty & inspired posts which didn’t happen because of the broken blog. I have now forgotten them all. So here’s a summary of some of August’s happenings…
Poly Tunnel
Things have been growing fast in the tunnel, its beginning to look like last year (where the squashes took over).

Squash
I planted too many squash plants in the poly tunnel, its now like some sci-fi experiment gone bad. The squashes have taken over, tendrils are going everywhere. I found this:

hiding down at the back, I don’t know how it got so big ( nearly 12″ by 7″), hopefully it will fit in the oven. We think its a spaghetti squash, but I didn’t make a note of what I planted where
